The UMC Advantage

A Campus-Wide Focus on Technology
The key to UMC's success of providing a notebook computer for every student and faculty member has been the integration of technology into the curriculum across every academic discipline. The clear achievement has been the combination of ubiquitous computing, unlimited access, and total immersion in a technology-rich environment. This brings students, faculty, and academic content together in a new and comprehensive way.

In a 2001 survey of graduating students 92.1 percent agreed or strongly agreed "The computer technology skills I developed at UMC are essential to my future employment"

The distinctive electronic learning environment at UMC complements the strong CST curriculum. All students are issued laptop computers and use them and related software on a daily basis. The resulting technological skill--or techno-savvy--combined with the degree program's career preparation makes UMC's graduates highly marketable and sought after by employers.

Internship
Internship is an integral part of the Computer Software Technology Program at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. It is an opportunity for students to apply their classroom knowledge in an on-the-job training situation. This practical on-the-job experience usually involves employment for approximately ten weeks in an area related to the student's career.

Real Experience
In addition to internships, CST students are in a unique position to gain direct experience by offering their technology skills to the campus. UMC operates two support departments related to its technology initiatives, Computing Services/Computer HelpDesk and the Instructional Technology Center (ITC). A combination of student workers and full-time support staff provide the services for both departments. Computing Services/Computer Helpdesk deals with all aspects of the ordering, loading, issuing, support, and repair of UMC's fleet of 1,400 leased notebook computers.

Many opportunities exist for CST students to work on a variety of technology-based projects for many departments on campus.

Related Programs
UMC also offers a bachelor of science degree in Information Technology Management (ITM) with emphases in three areas: Application Development; E-Learning; and Systems Administration. UMC's ITM program focuses on business and management of information systems, while the CST program is a software engineering program, where math, physics, and computer science play a foundational role. The CST program is a complement to the ITM program and widens the array of options for UMC students upon graduation.
