Nationwide, software developers are in demand. Despite the bust of the dot-com bubble and while marketing and sales forces are trimmed, employers are vigorously seeking competent programmers. An ability to program in a structured language such as C, object oriented programming languages (C++, Java), fluency using XML, JavaScript, HTML, Perl, ASP, an aptitude in managing databases, knowledge of communication technologies, and experience with multiple hardware platforms are among the common characteristics listed in the job descriptions appropriate for graduates of the CST program.

According the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, eight of ten of the fastest growing occupations through 2010 are software engineering and are computer related. The Bureau predicts increases upwards of 80% expected in fields related to application development, systems software, and database administration--occupations for which the CST program prepares graduates.

Students who graduate with a bachelor of science degree in Computer Software Technology degree will be employable in a variety of software-related jobs in the state, nation, and region, meeting the demands projected by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. Among the job titles graduates can expect to acquire are:
  • Computer software engineer
  • Computer support specialist
  • Computer software engineer, systems software
  • Network and computer systems administrator
  • Network systems and data communications analyst
  • Database administrator
  • Computer systems analyst
In addition to mathematical and programming logic, an ability to communicate, business acumen, and a strong sense of community are paramount to a successful career in software systems. As such, these attributes and skills are reinforced throughout the curriculum of UMC's CST program.
