Internship/practicum requirements and expenses

•  Students are required to provide their own transportation from the practicum site. The sites are all within the city of Crookston . Students without a vehicle can share a ride with another student.

•  Students will be required to have current immunizations and medical insurance. This is at the students' expense.

•  Students will be required to complete a criminal background check. This is provided without charge by UMC.

•  Students will be required to complete HIPPA training. This is provided without charge by UMC.

•  Students will be required to have a lab coat. These are available locally at several stores.

•  Internship students are required to provide their own housing and pay their own expenses. Most facilities do not provide a stipend. Internship is not completed in Crookston. See list below for sites. The students are required to provide their own transportation to the internship site.

•  The internship student may be eligible for financial aid to help with these expenses.



Practicum

The student will complete three practicum for a total of 300 clock hours

Community Practicum: 
90 clock hours

The student will complete supervised experience in a variety of community health care and nutrition settings. The students will participate in activities such as Head Start, WIC, food bank, food shelf, public school and health fairs.

Food Practicum:  100 clock hours

The student will develop skills in a healthcare food service system.  The student will cost and standardize recipes, complete a marketing project, write menus, participate in quality assurance studies, complete yield studies, and present in-service training.    

Clinical Practicum:  110 clock hours

The student will gain extensive clinical patient care experience in a nursing home and hospital setting.  The student will complete calorie counts, diet histories, nutritional screening and assessments, quality assurance studies, documentation in the medical record, diet instructions, MDS forms and care plans.


Internship  

The internship is completed in a health care or community nutrition setting under the direction of a registered dietitian.  The internship is 400 clock hours and is taken the last semester before graduation.

  • St. Mary’s Hospital, Duluth, MN


Graduating Students
