Graduates from the dietetic technician program are employed in a wide variety of settings across the health care and foodservice industries.  They work in hospitals as clinical dietetic technicians; in schools, day care facilities, and nursing homes as food service directors; in health clubs and wellness centers as nutritional consultants; and in a variety of community nutrition programs such as WIC, senior meals, or county health departments.

Salaries and Job Outlook

According to the ADA's 1997 membership database, among entry-level registered dietetic technicians, 63% of those who were employed full time reported incomes ranging from $20,000 to $30,000 per year in their first five years, and 15% earned between $30,000 and $40,000 per year in the same timeframe.  Most UMC graduates start at $11-15  per hour.  Generally benefits are good and include vacation, sick leave and health insurance.  Salary levels vary according to region, employment setting, geographical location, and scope of responsibility.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in this career field is expected to grow through the year 2005 because of increased emphasis on disease prevention, a growing and aging population, and a public interest in nutrition.
